Taormina
The theater of Taormina is so much a superb place that no other place similar to it can exist in the whole world.
(Guy de Maupassant)
No to be missed
Over the sea, crowned by Etna - registered in the UNESCO World Heritage List for its naturalistic beauties (sometimes in eruption, sometimes hooded of snow), magnificent and peaceful, international and truly unique in its kind genre, ancient yet extremely lively: this is Taormina. The city center unfolds around the beautiful Umberto I Street, which runs along the ancient Roman consular street and between the two ancient gates of the city: Porta Messina and Porta Catania. Along Umberto I Street is the panoramic Square IX Aprile. From there, the Middle Gate leads to the heart of the medieval center. The nearby "Naumachie" are majestic witnesses of the Roman imperial age: these imposing blind arches in red brick were made to support a magnificent ancient tank of springs. The most remarkable of the many architectural jewels of the city is the theater of over two thousand years, originally built by the Greeks and then modified in Roman times, where world-level artistic events take place.
Taormina can also boast wonderful buildings (Corvaja, Ciampoli, Dukes of Santo Stefano), Churches (Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, San Pancrazio, San Giuseppe and the Cathedral, dedicated to San Nicola), towers, villas, terraces and gardens...
