Itinerary

DAY 1: PALERMO

  • Arrival at Palermo airport. After picking up the rental car, drive to Palermo. There are no planned activities on this day. Free time to explore the city on your own. Overnight in Palermo.

DAY 2: PALERMO, MONREALE & MONDELLO

  • Breakfast at the hotel. Today you are free to relax and explore the city on your own Palermo

Suggested itinerary: Today you will visit Palermo - You will start with the Teatro Massimo, the third largest opera house in Europe. Then you will enter the popular market "Il Capo," which resembles an African souk; at the end of the market visit, you will taste a typical Sicilian "Arancina" in a bar, a local street food specialty. You will continue the visit in the old part of the city with the Cathedral, the Royal Palace, and the Palatine Chapel. Proceed to Monreale, famous for its Cathedral with polychrome mosaics on a golden background, depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament, and conclude the visit with the cloister. In the afternoon, enjoy one of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, so close to the center of Palermo. You will reach Mondello beach in 30 minutes from the city center. Mondello was (and still is) a fishing village, which at the beginning of the 20th century was chosen by wealthy Palermo families as a summer holiday destination. For this reason, many Art Nouveau villas can be admired there, as well as another interesting Art Nouveau building, the "Bathing Establishment," built on stilts over the water, which also houses one of the best restaurants in Palermo. Mondello beach has a semicircular shape, between two headlands (Monte Pellegrino and Capo Gallo), and the color of the sea will amaze you. Depending on the weather and sea conditions, you might also have the chance to swim (from May to the end of October). A walk along the palm-lined promenade is a "must." In the main square, you will have the opportunity to taste Sicilian street food specialties or an ice cream on your own. Return to the center of Palermo. Overnight in Palermo.

DAY 3: MARSALA, ERICE & SEGESTA

  • Breakfast at the hotel. Today you are free to relax and explore the city on your own or you can visit Marsala Stagnone, Erice, and Segesta.

Suggested itinerary: Go to Marsala, famous for its salt pans and wine production. Stop at the Stagnone Reserve, a magical place with a natural landscape of rare beauty due to its white salt pans with windmills. Continue driving to Erice, the medieval town on top of Mount San Giuliano. Here you can admire the Norman Castle (outside) and the Cathedral. Meanwhile, we suggest stopping at a bakery to taste the typical almond paste of Erice. Continue to Segesta, one of the most beautiful archaeological sites in Sicily, where it is recommended to visit the Doric temple whose majestic appearance and dominant position give great nobility to the landscape. Return to Palermo. Overnight in Palermo.

DAY 4: AGRIGENTO & RAGUSA

  • Breakfast at the hotel. Today you will go to Ragusa making a stop at Agrigento to discover the wonderful and famous Valley of the Temples where you can admire the Temple of Juno, the Temple of Concordia (one of the best-preserved Doric temples in the entire Greek world), the Temple of Hercules, and the Temple of Castor and Pollux. You will arrive in Ragusa in the afternoon and immediately admire the historic center of Ragusa "Ibla," characterized by numerous churches and Baroque-style palaces, as well as the characteristic domes that dominate the city. Ragusa has been included in the UNESCO list, with 18 sites declared World Heritage. Accommodation in a hotel. Overnight in the Ragusa/Syracuse area.

DAY 5: RAGUSA, MODICA & NOTO

  • Breakfast at the hotel. Today we suggest spending the day visiting the Baroque cities of Modica and Noto

Suggested itinerary: Today you will be able to discover the lesser-known part of Sicily, dominated by the sumptuous and majestic Baroque style of the buildings, characterized by numerous UNESCO sites and also known for the TV series "Inspector Montalbano." Start your visit from the historic center of Ragusa, "Ibla," characterized by numerous Baroque churches and palaces, as well as the characteristic domes that dominate the city. Ragusa has been included in the UNESCO list, with 18 sites declared World Heritage. Continue to Modica, a UNESCO city, known especially for its chocolate as well as its wonderful buildings. We recommend wandering through the alleys, always moving upwards; once you reach the highest part of the hill, you can admire a wonderful panorama of the city. Continue your tour by going to Noto, included by UNESCO in the list of World Heritage sites in 2002. Cross the famous Arch, stroll through the center admiring the wonderful aristocratic palaces with famous decorated balconies, the sumptuous churches rich in decorations, the cathedral with its staircase, and the city theater, all built in Baroque style. Return to the hotel in the Ragusa/Syracuse area and overnight.

DAY 6: ETNA & TAORMINA

  • Breakfast at the hotel. Today you are free to relax and explore the surroundings or swim at the beach or visit Etna and Taormina

Suggested itinerary: Reach Etna, the highest peak in Sicily and the most active volcano in Europe. The territory surrounding the volcano constitutes the "Etna Park," one of the largest protected areas in Italy. You will be amazed by the great variety of vegetation and landscapes encountered along the route before arriving at the "Silvestri Craters" (about 1,900 m). From here on, you will have the possibility to continue the excursion by jeep and cable car. Continue to Taormina. While walking and discovering the surprising city of Taormina, you will see beautiful ancient buildings, including the 15th-century Palazzo Corvaja and an ancient Greco-Roman theater, the 2nd largest classical theater in Sicily. Discover the medieval area of the city with its narrow streets and old shops. Return to the hotel in the Ragusa/Syracuse area.

DAY 7: CEFALU'

  • Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Palermo.
  • Suggested itinerary: Drive to Cefalù, one of the main tourist destinations in Sicily. Cefalù, a medieval fishing village at the foot of a promontory, also hosts a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Arab-Norman Cathedral, which looks like a fortress. The cathedral was erected by the Norman king Roger II as his burial site (no longer used for this purpose today); for this reason, the polychrome mosaics on a golden background were placed only in the apse and not on the sides of the cathedral. Then stroll through the narrow streets and admire the medieval washhouse, used until the 1950s. Free time to admire the beach, shop, or independently visit the Mandralisca Museum, which houses "The Unknown" by the famous Sicilian painter Antonello da Messina. Continue to Palermo. Overnight in Palermo/Mondello.
