Itinerary

DAY 1: ARRIVAL (KM 120/250)

  • Arrival at Rome/Florence airport. After picking up the rental car, reach the hotel at Lake Trasimeno, dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 2: PERUGIA (KM 60)

  • Breakfast at the hotel. This day we suggest you spend your day in Perugia, a city of art and history, located in a splendid position between the Tiber Valley and Lake Trasimeno, climbing up to the Rocca, the heart of the historic center, enclosed by Etruscan and medieval walls.

  • Suggested itinerary: Visit the city: the Palazzo dei Priori, now the seat of the Municipality and the Umbrian National Gallery, the Fontana Maggiore, symbol of the city and a splendid example of sculpture, executed by the brothers Nicola and Giovanni Pisano in 1280, the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, dating back to the mid-14th century. Visit the Noble College of Money Changers, ancient seat of bankers and money changers, a true treasure chest. The Audience Hall hosts a cycle of frescoes by Pietro Perugino, a masterpiece of the artist at the peak of his career at the end of the 15th century. At the end of the visit, free time in the city center. A stop is recommended at one of Perugia's historic pastry shops to taste one of the chocolate specialties or a visit to the Umbrian National Gallery inside the Palazzo dei Priori. In October: possibility to visit the Eurochocolate stands in Perugia. Accommodation at the hotel. Dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 3: ASSISI (KM 98)

  • Breakfast at the hotel. This day we suggest you spend the day in Assisi.

  • Suggested itinerary: Reach Assisi, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site because it "preserves a collection of masterpieces of human creative genius." Every stone speaks of its most illustrious citizen, Saint Francis, Patron of Italy. The visit, between art and spirituality, begins at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli which houses the "Porziuncola," the place where Saint Francis died: long neglected, it was restored by Francis himself upon his return to Assisi at the end of 1207. Continue towards the center where you admire the Basilica of Saint Francis with the Saint’s tomb and the splendid frescoes by Giotto and his school. Along the alleys, reach the Church of Saint Clare with the Saint’s relics and the wooden crucifix which, according to tradition, spoke to Saint Francis. Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 4: SPELLO & SPOLETO (KM 180)

  • Breakfast at the hotel. This day we suggest you spend the day in Spello and Spoleto.

  • Suggested itinerary: Breakfast at the hotel. The day is dedicated to visiting some of the most beautiful cities in Umbria. First visit to Spello, an ancient medieval village at the foot of Monte Subasio, among the most beautiful in Italy. Visit the Baglioni Chapel inside the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, famous for a cycle of frescoes by Pinturicchio dating back to 1500 and the ceramic floors from Deruta. Continue to Spoleto. Visit the city: the Roman Theater, Palazzo Mauri, the Church of Sant'Ansano and the Arch of Drusus. In the afternoon, reach the Marmore Falls, a natural spectacle of incredible charm, included by UNESCO among the World Heritage Sites. Praised over the centuries for its beauty, it appears as a roaring column of water distributed over three drops over 165 meters high. Walk along one of the park’s trails. Return to the hotel in the evening, dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 5: GUBBIO (KM 150)

  • Breakfast at the hotel. This day we recommend you spend the day in Gubbio.

  • Suggested itinerary: Departure towards Gubbio, one of the oldest cities in Umbria, at the foot of Monte Ingino. Visit the historic center with Piazza Grande, a true terrace over the city, the Palazzo dei Consoli with its unmistakable battlemented profile, the Cathedral and the Renaissance-style Ducal Palace commissioned by Federico da Montefeltro. Possibility to take the funicular up Monte Ingino (optional and for a fee) to the Basilica of Saint Ubaldo, protector of the city - Return to the hotel and overnight stay.

DAY 6: URBINO (KM 280)

  • Breakfast at the hotel and visit to Urbino.
  • Suggested itinerary: departure for Urbino. Visit the historic center, cradle of the first Italian Renaissance, with entrance to the Cathedral and Raphael’s House (purchased by his father Giovanni Santi, humanist, poet and painter at the court of the Montefeltro). Here Raphael was born in 1483; it is a modest home that includes a small fresco attributed to the young Raphael: it is the "Madonna of Casa Santi" in the reading. Continue with the visit to the Ducal Palace, which houses the National Gallery of the Marche where absolute masterpieces are exhibited such as the "Portrait of a Gentleman" called "La Muta" (Raphael), the "Flagellation" and the "Madonna of Senigallia" (Piero della Francesca), the "Ideal City" (formerly attributed to L. Laurana), paintings and sculptures from the 13th to the 18th century and the Duke’s Studiolo, the most intimate room of the Palace commissioned by Federico di Montefeltro, a unique masterpiece of wooden inlay. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

DAY 7: JESI & LORETO

  • Breakfast at the hotel and departure for Jesi. We will see the square where Emperor Frederick II of Swabia was born. We will also see the Cathedral of San Settimio and the Federico II Stupor Mundi Museum, the first large multimedia museum dedicated to the figure of the Emperor of Swabia, which tells the life and deeds of Frederick II through sixteen thematic rooms. We will also see the 15th-century Palazzo della Signoria, a masterpiece of Renaissance civil architecture. Continue to Loreto, a city that hosts one of the most important Marian sanctuaries of Christianity, second only to that of Lourdes in the Pyrenees. Visit the Basilica of Loreto, a masterpiece of Renaissance art, designed by Donato Bramante and entirely built in white Istrian stone. Inside is the Holy House, kept in a splendid marble shrine, designed by Donato Bramante in 1509 on commission from Pope Julius II and completed by Andrea Sansovino and Antonio da Sangallo the Younger.
