DAY 2: SIENA & SAN GIMIGNANO
Breakfast at the hotel. Today you are free to relax and explore the city on your own, or you can choose to spend the day in Siena and San Gimignano.
Suggested itinerary: Head toward the Chianti area, which stretches between Siena and Florence and gave rise to one of the most famous wines, Chianti. Let yourself be enchanted by one of the most magnificent landscapes of hills, fields, numerous vineyards, and olive groves. You will be able to discover San Gimignano, whose towering towers can be seen from afar. Worth seeing are the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, the Palazzo del Popolo with the Civic Museum, and Piazza della Cisterna with its beautiful fountain. Continue to Siena. The medieval city of Siena is a work of art from the Gothic period. With its winding historic center and narrow streets paved with Siena clay bricks, and its tall reddish-brown buildings, it almost seems as if the clock of the centuries has stopped. The historic center, on its three hills grouped in the shape of three stars, is famous for its Palazzo Pubblico and its Torre del Mangia (88 meters high). From here you can enjoy a splendid view of the famous and beautiful Piazza del Campo. Overnight stay in Montecatini Terme.
DAY 3: PISA & LUCCA
Breakfast at the hotel. Today you are free to relax and explore the city on your own, or you can choose to dedicate the day to visiting Pisa and Lucca.
Suggested itinerary: The Leaning Tower of Pisa has made it famous throughout the world. During your day trip you can admire Piazza dei Miracoli, the unique composition of the Cathedral, the Leaning Tower, the Baptistery, and the Camposanto. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is a masterpiece of Italian architecture. Inside the Baptistery you can visit Nicola Pisano's hexagonal pulpit. Very distinctive, in its own way, is the Cemetery, which has the shape of a monumental cloister. Continue to Lucca and visit this splendid medieval city with the Guinigi Tower and the Clock Tower. From these points you can enjoy a splendid view over the rooftops of the Tuscan city, a panorama that allows you to appreciate its beauty and harmony, and to rediscover the same urban structure built by the Romans. Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, so named because of what once stood in this space now occupied by one of the most beautiful squares in Italy. The Church of San Michele, also called the Forum, is the place where the center of ancient Lucca once stood. Overnight stay in Montecatini Terme.
DAY 4: LAKE TRASIMENO, PERUGIA & ASSISI
Breakfast at the hotel. Today you are free to relax and explore the city on your own, or you can choose to dedicate the day to visiting Lake Trasimeno, Perugia, and Assisi.
Suggested itinerary: Crossing the Tuscan countryside, the first place you will encounter is Passignano sul Trasimeno, a small medieval village with ancient walls and a splendid fortress. The town is home to a famous tourist center in a magical location that offers breathtaking views of the enchanting lake and the surrounding islands. After this visit, continue through the evocative landscape until you reach the hill on which the ancient city of Perugia stands. Traces of its Etruscan origins are preserved in the travertine walls and in the welcoming city center. Perugia is one of Italy's most appreciated art cities, with a splendid square from which you can admire architectural gems such as the superb Palazzo dei Priori and the splendid Cathedral next to the Loggia. The elegant Fontana Maggiore is another breathtaking masterpiece. Continue to Assisi, the characteristic town where the patron saint of Italy, Saint Francis of Assisi, lived, worked, and died. The city of Assisi lies at the foot of Mount Subasio. Upon arrival, you should first visit the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, built to protect the famous church of the "Porziuncola." Here you can also see the "rose garden without thorns." Continue to the center of Assisi where you can visit the city's civil and religious artistic heritage. Admire the splendid Gothic Basilica dedicated to Saint Clare, the new Renaissance Church with an elegant dome, and the Roman temple of Minerva, which still preserves its 1st-century AD facade. Discover the 14th-century Monte Frumentario and finally visit the famous and beautiful Basilica of Saint Francis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, built with the white-pink stone of Mount Subasio. Inside the Basilica are preserved the wonderful fresco cycles created by Cimabue, Giotto, Simone Martini, and Lorenzetti. Breathe in the special atmosphere of serenity and joy that this city emanates and you will understand why it was chosen as a symbol of Peace by delegates of the world's major religions. Return to Montecatini and overnight stay.
