Begin your day trip by boarding your air-conditioned coach from the hotel or a meeting point, then relax during the 1-hour journey inland toward Mount Etna, the island’s menacing and spectacular enemy. Mount Etna is Sicily’s highest peak and the most active volcano in Europe. The area surrounding the volcano forms “Etna Park,” one of Italy’s largest protected areas: you will be amazed by the great variety of vegetation and landscapes encountered along the way before arriving at the “Silvestri Craters” at about 1,900 meters.
Get off your coach at the lower station of Rifugio Sapienza and enjoy about three hours of free time to take a self-guided excursion at the foot of the volcano. The area is covered with hiking trails that wind in every direction, and your guide will point you in the right direction toward the Silvestri Craters – two small but impressive craters near the lower station.
