Extending between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Sicilian Sea, in the extreme north-western part of the island, Trapani is a town with a very strong personality, characterised by narrow, winding roads, a beautiful seafront, an ancient ghetto, and charming historical shops (as well as, a few nautical miles away, the Egadi archipelago).
Nestled on top of Mount San Giuliano stands Erice, a medieval village surrounded by megalithic walls that has remained unchanged over the centuries; more inland is Calatafimi, with the Doric architectural ruins of Segesta. Along the coast, north-eastbound, beyond the ancient fishing village of Bonagia, one can reach San Vito lo Capo and then the fishing village of Scopello, Castellamare del Golfo, and the lovely peaceful Zingaro Nature Reserve.
Driving south from Trapani, instead, the dazzling white salinas can be found, followed by the archaeological excavations of Mozia, dating back to the Phoenician times; the baroque Marsala, the port town of Mazara del Vallo; and Selinunte, with its wonderful temples.
Another jewel in Trapani’s crown is undoubtedly the island of Pantelleria, famous for its incredible brightness, its capers, and the Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria). The Vite ad alberello di Pantelleria (head trained bush vines) was the latest entry in the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site List and is the first agricultural technique to be included in the list as an immaterial, cultural asset.
