The Church of Santa Domenica is also worth a visit; it is a rare and precious example of a 7th century Byzantine domed building. Head to Francavilla di Sicilia, a beautiful town in the Alcantara valley, where a violent battle between Spaniards and Austrians took place in the 16th century. Here we suggest you visit the Capuchin Monastery, founded in the 16th century. After tasting the local food and wine, head to the Alcantara Gorges. To go down the gorge you can take the stairs or, for a fee, you can take the elevator that will take you down 50 meters to the river.
